LiteracyLink (1997-2002) is a five-year Star Schools Project, funded through the U.S. Department of Education. In partnership with PBS and public TV station KET, NCAL has researched and developped an integrated learning system using online, video, and print media to deliver instruction, assessment, and teacher training for GED and workforce preparation skills for adult learners.

What is it?

LiteracyLink consists of three major components: LitHelper, LitLearner, and LitTeacher. LitLearner is the online component of LiteracyLink, providing instruction for adult learners in GED preparation and Workplace Essential Skills. LitHelper identifies the skills, interests, and goals of individual learners and will craft an individual learning plan for each adult participant. LitTeacher is a technology-based "virtual" continuing education resource center that offers training in instructional and technology issues, technical assistance, and a rich online menu of materials on literacy education.

LiteracyLink’s products and services are being field-tested by 25 innovation sites linked to five public television stations around the nation, which include schools, libraries, colleges, business, and community-based organizations.

LinkLearner is a new multi-media instructional package that teaches basic skills in reading, writing, communication and math in a workplace context. These skills include strategies and attitudes necessary to find, keep and thrive in a job. The package includes features such as videoprograms, student workbooks, teacher's guide and web-based lessons tied to videos and workbooks.

The LitTeacher component of LiteracyLink is a multifaceted system to provide professional development opportunities and resources for adult educators and administrators.
