This video gives an overview of a literacy project in Peru developed especially for Quechua women. The literacy project is run in three different regions by CADEP, APED and PeruMujer, NGOs specifically concerned with women's issues and rural development in Peru.

APED, Asociacion de Ecologia y el Desarrollo (Association for Ecology and Development). This is one of the participating NGOs in the literacy and civic education program discussed in this report. Their program has been instituted in 42 communities throughout the provinces of Calca, Cuzco and Paruro. It has reached approximately 800 women to date. No confirmed contact information could be found.

This is another of the three NGOs described in the present report. They are involved in not only women's education but also education at the elementary level as well as other development projects for the rural Andean region they serve. This is an organization that collects, processes and disseminates all types of information on women's issues in Peru. The areas of concentration for their information are politico-cultural, their extensive bibliography, research and education, and institutional development. Their website is presented in Spanish.

FLORA TRISTAN, Centro de la Mujer Peruana (Center for Peruvian Women): http://ekeko.rcp.net.pe/FLORA/
This is an NGO that focuses on feminist issues of Peruvian women. One of the many areas of their work is literacy of rural women. One of the sections of their homepage is an essay section, in which can be found, among other things, research papers on the state of rural and indigenous women. PeruMujer. This is the third of the three NGOs involved in the project described in this report. It is a feminist organization that is involved in women's issues throughout Peru. This project is just one of many dedicated to bettering the lives of Peruvian women. No confirmed contact information could be found.

PROMUDEH, Ministerio de Promocion de la Mujer y del Desarrollo Humano (Ministry for Promotion of Women and of Human Development): http://www.promudeh.gob.pe/
This is a government ministry whose sole focus is women's issues in Peru. They are concerned with the development of women and the family, equal opportunity and intervening with children at risk. Their website is presented in Spanish.

Sources on Literacy and Bilingual Education in Peru

Colegio Andino: http://www.cbc.org.pe/coland is graduate program of study that focuses on Andean topics, such as Quechua language and linguistics, bilingual education, anthropology and sociology offering courses on gender issues, the cultural reality of the rural Andes, etc. The program is sponsored by the Centro de Estudios Andinos Bartolomo de las Casas. Their website is presented in Spanish.

ERA, Educacion Rural Andina (Andean Rural Education Program). This program applies a diversified curriculum for initial and primary education in 187 schools in the rural areas of Cuzco and Puno departments. No further information was found.

PEBIACH, Proyecto de Educacion Bilingue Intercultural de Andahuaylas y Chincheros (Andahuaylas and Chincheros Bilingual Intercultural Education Project), funded by the Antoon Spinoy Foundation. This is a bilingual, intercultural education program in 15 schools, teaching 600 Quechua speaking children in the department of Apurimac. No further information was found.

PROEIB, Programa de Formacion en Educacion Intercultural Bilingue para los Paises Andinos (Training Program in Intercultural Bilingual Education for the Andean Countries): http://www.proeibandes.org/
This program is directed towards training educators for the Andean context, rather than directly teaching the people in rural communities. The countries involved in this program include Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Chile, and the program itself is based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Numerous foreign NGOs are also involved in this initiative, offering their expertise and financial support as appropriate. Some of these organizations include GTZ of Germany, the Universidad Mayor de San Simon de Cochabamba in Bolivia, UNICEF Bolivia, UNICEF-OREALC, the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), and the Linguapax Program of UNESCO. It tends to have a more academic/professional focus, so it is a good place to look for information on organizations and initiatives focusing on scientific, political, developmental, educational, etc. issues in Peru.
