Most nations collect and report data about literacy skills of their citizens to inform discussions by educators, officials, and interest groups and to provide a basis for policy setting.
This part of the Explorer has two goals:
- To serve as a training and learning tool for those who want to become more familiar with the concepts and issues involved in literacy assessment and the interpretation of literacy statistics. If you are relatively new to this area, see the Introduction.
- To show statistical
data about literacy levels for different countries and regions. This can
answer questions you may have or provide further
training on using literacy data. If you are already familiar
with general concepts, you can move ahead to
Basic statistics.
See Statistics Resources for a listing of both printed and online resources for statistical data. Check the Glossary of Terms for an alphabetical list of definitons of statistics terms. To jump to any of the Statistics sections, use the menu at the top of each page.
