Middletown Adult Education: Resource Review: A.D.A.M. Essentials Software*

Teacher: Lin Schroeder, AHSCDP Teacher

Type of Resource: Software

Description:

A.D.A.M. Essentials High School Suite is a five CD-ROM series. It is a great resource for students studying the human body. The series speaks to anatomy and physiology – why our body is the way it is and how things work. Humor is a big part of the presentation of material.

How the resource was used in class:

I use this resource as a supplement to the textbook. The software provides audio, visual, and is interactive. As we study a particular body system, I use A.D.A.M. to provide a different learning modality (there’s that word again), for that particular body system. Interactive games and assessments are built into the software and are engaging for the students.

The things I like most about the resource are as follows:

  • Allows students to work independently, move at their own pace.
  • Corny humor engages the students.
  • Interactive nature of software is a big plus.

Students enjoy the control they have over their learning, the novelty of interactive software, and the ability to go at their own speed.

Limitations and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

None at this time.
