Northwestern Connecticut Community College/Adult Education:
Technology-facilitated Lesson Plan (An Important Lesson I Learned
in America)*
Teacher:
Robin Nardini and Astrid Robitaille
Class/Level:
ESL
Lesson Duration:
2 hours
Objectives (Learning Goals):
To respond to the writing prompt- An important
lesson I have learned in America is…, and to create a PowerPoint
presentation about that lesson.
Rationale:
This was a computer literacy lesson on using
PowerPoint and the digital camera. It also gave the students an
opportunity to write on a subject that was important to most members
of the class.
Technologies Used:
- MS PowerPoint
- SmartBoard
- Digital Camera
Other Materials:
None
Learning and Teaching Activities:
The students were already familiar with basic
computer, mouse and Word operations. The students were shown the
writing prompt on the SMART Board, and asked to brainstorm and
come up with some responses. We shared the various responses and
then corrected them on the SMART Board and reviewed creating a
presentation in PowerPoint. Features reviewed in PowerPoint were:
creating a slide, editing a slide, changing fonts, changing colors,
and inserting a picture from file. We then gave a demonstration
of the digital camera, and asked the students to take each other’s
pictures. We also demonstrated downloading digital pictures to
a computer and saving them to a floppy. Each student came up to
the instructor’s station and downloaded their own pictures
to their own floppies with the aid of the instructor.
Evaluation of Learning:
The students really enjoyed writing about lessons
learned in America, and incorporating their writing into a presentation.
The use of the digital camera added to the fun. The presentation
was shared with everyone on Technology Day and was thoroughly
enjoyed by all.
Comments:
This lesson runs more efficiently with the help
of a computer aide.
