Stamford Adult Education: Resource Review: Steck-Vaughn 21st Century GED Program*

Teacher: Joe Brunner, Stamford Adult Education - GED Preparation

Type of Resource: Software

Description:

Steck-Vaughn’s program combines this software with their GED textbook so that the student has additional practice as well as instruction in the field that most challenges him/her. In addition, practice exams facilitate determining the student’s strengths and weaknesses to facilitate the use of time effectively. This encourages a focused approach to passing the GED exam.

How the resource was used in class:

The program is most beneficial to those students who score above 200 on their initial exams. It allows review as well as instruction for those areas in which a student is deficient. The use of the program is individualized through the use of six laptop computers available in the classroom. Teacher and student confer to determine the section of the program that would be most beneficial.

The things I like most about the resource are as follows:

The explanations to the problems are the most succinct I’ve seen in any program.

The students love the clarity of the explanations, especially when they’ve made an error.

Limitations and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

You can get hooked on the subject and lose track of time.

Comments:

Love it!
