Stamford Adult Education: Resource Review: ModuMath*

Teacher: Joe Brunner, Stamford Adult Education - GED Preparation

Type of Resource: Software, Basic to Pre-Algebra Mathematics

Description:

This is an audio-visual approach to teaching specific elements of middle and high school math. The teacher and the student decide which specific skill requires instruction. It could involve the division of fractions, the use of angles in geometry or the correct use of signed numbers. Each lesson is on its own CD and allows a student to work at his or her own pace.

How the resource was used in class:

ModuMath is currently being used for individualized instruction. I am taking a course this summer to learn how to incorporate the program into a class lesson using a laptop computer and a SMARTBoard.

The things I like most about the resource are as follows:

The teacher and the students both appreciate the clear and concise method of instruction as well as the examples and practice items. Any element of the lesson can be reviewed as often as needed.

Student response was extremely positive.

Limitations and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

The key to success is the amount of practice that helps develop a particular skill. Those students to whom the skill is first introduced must review the skill aggressively in order to retain the learning. It is ideal as a review for those students who were exposed to the skills through previous instruction.

An accompanying text with additional problems might be useful.

Comments:

This is a terrific program.
