Stamford Adult Education: Technology-facilitated Lesson Plan (Introductory Teknimedia Class)*

Teacher: Carol Riordan

Class/Level: Intermediate and Advanced ESL, ABE, GED

Lesson Duration: 1 hour

Rationale:

During the 2002-2003 school year, I ran a focus group to determine student needs. From this focus group it was very clear that the students wanted more opportunities to learn basic computer skills that suited their individual level of competence and at times that would fit into their individual schedules. Teknimedia was a program that suited both these needs.

Technologies Used:

  • 27 Dell Desktop PCs
    • 7.5 Gigabytes
    • 64 MB of Ram
    • 20/48X CD-ROM Drives
  • 2 Printers
    • HP Laser Jet Printer (4000N)
    • HP Color Printer (8955cxi)
  • Windows 98
  • Teknimedia

Other Materials:

Professor Teaches Office 2000 Learning Series

Learning and Teaching Activities:

On the first day of class, students were introduced to the computer and the Windows environment. They were then introduced to the Teknimedia program and how to use it.

Teknimedia is a program that starts with skills as basic as using the mouse up through intermediate word processing skills. All students start at the beginning with PC100.

Evaluation of Learning:

After completing the first course, which takes approximate 4-6 hours, the students then take a written test to see if they mastered the skill set presented. If they pass with a level of 70% understanding, they move onto the next level in Teknimedia. If they receive less than 70% understanding, they return to the program to review before they are once again tested.

After completing PC100 a few students may feel that they are further along in their abilities. If this is the case, I allow them to test out of higher levels. For the more advanced students, I also use Professor Teaches Office 2000 (Individual Software) as supplementary material.

Comments:

The students enjoyed using Teknimedia. Student retention was high. At the end of a four-week mini-course, approximately 75 percent of the class remained wishing to continue.

Teknimedia also supplies the teacher with certificates to present to each student as they successfully complete each course. These certificates are valuable to the students when seeking future job opportunities and also good for enhancement of student self-confidence.
