Wallingford Adult Education: Technology-facilitated
Lesson Plan (Research Project)*
Teachers:
Joan Troccolo, Language Arts Instructor, ABE
Mauri Shields, ESL Instructor
Pam Andersen, Technology Coordinator, ABE, GED, EDP, ESL
Class/Level:
Multi-level Class: ABE, GED, EDP, ESL
Lesson Duration:
4 weeks
Objectives (Learning Goals):
Students will demonstrate effective use of
technology, ability to use search engines, write successfully
about learning, work effectively with other people, and will demonstrate
problem-solving skills. The basic skills of reading, writing,
and, in the case of some students, math will be reinforced. Particular
emphasis is placed on CASAS competencies 4.5, 7.1,7.2,7.3, 7.4.
Students are working on research projects of
their choosing. Objectives, therefore, vary. For example: students
buying a home will further their knowledge of consumer economics
with particular emphasis on CASAS competency 1.4 Student studying
retirement will further knowledge of CASAS competency 4.2.
Rationale:
As this is a student-directed activity and students
choose the subject of their research, it is the students who have
decided that they need to learn more about a particular topic.
This project is unique in that it enables students
to work on several important skills within one cohesive unit:
collaborating with other students, reading, writing, math, keyboarding,
word processing, and using internet search engines.
Technologies Used:
- Desktop Computers
- Internet Search Engines (Google, Altavista, Mamma)
- The Writer Keyboard Appliance
- Wireless IR data transmission
- MS Word
- LCD Projector
Other Materials:
Research Project Lesson Documents
Learning and Teaching Activities:
Each student will choose a topic that they would
like to learn more about. A list of all student research topics
will be compiled and distributed to all participants. Students
will offer their ideas for key words, phrases, names, and places
associated with the topic that could help with their fellow students.
Students will then work on their individual
projects using internet search engines to research projects. They
will compile a list of found internet resources and web sites
by printing lists and/or storing them as “bookmarks.”
Some students will use the writer to complete part of KWL chart.
They will beam their writing to the desktop computers where they
will further edit their work, add clip art graphics, and page
borders.
Evaluation of Learning:
Students will review progress on KWL charts
and computer search results – presenting their findings
using an LCD projector, on “presentation day,” at
the end of the unit.
As students work individually on research project,
students will be monitored and feedback will be provided. Students
will self-evaluate progress. Since this is on of our monthly projects,
final assessment will not be given until Presentation Day.
