Waterbury Adult Education: Resource Review: Steck-Vaughn 21st Century GED Program*

Teachers: Jim Monroe, GED

Type of Resource: Software

Description:

This GED software serves as practice GED tests for all required GED subject areas including the following: Language Arts, Writing; Social Studies: Science; Language Art, Reading; and Math. It contains three separate tests which are useful for pre-testing and post-testing for each individual student.

How the resource was used in class:

Each new GED student takes a pre-test for each subject area which reveals their areas of strengths and weaknesses. At the end of each class, another test is given and used as a post-test to show the areas of improvement and the areas which need improvement. The tests are recorded instantaneously and a copy of each student’s results can be printed out. Waterbury Adult Education requires each student to pass all five subject tests in order to register for the real GED tests.

The things I like most about the resource are as follows:

Students get the opportunity to practice using their reading and comprehension skills under timed conditions. This gives them real GED practice and they also learn how to get around on the computer. They also can get instant test results and prescriptions for incorrect answer responses to show weak areas.

Limitations and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

Computer practice tests do not simulate the actual GED which contains a hand-written essay, and bubble sheets for multiple choice type questions. However, Steck-Vaughn does provide WAE with question booklets of the same three tests for practical experience. Students still get good GED practice with the computer tests.
