Waterbury Adult Education: Resource Review: America's
Job Bank, SIGI-Plus, College Information Video*
Teachers: Jacqueline Butler
Type of Resource:
Internet site & software with a projector, VHS.
Description:
America’s Job Bank http://www.ajb.dni.us/
is a very comprehensive site that allows a user to create an account
where their resume becomes available to millions of potential
employers. The system is fast, free and easy. Help is even available
to write the user’s job description.
Educational and career planning software that
integrates self-assessment with in-depth and up-to-date career
information that is easy to use and provides students and adults
with a realistic view of the best educational and career options
for their future success. For more information, visit http://www.ets.org/sigi/.
The video "College Information" provides valuable information on grants, loans, etc.
How the resource was used in class:
The Internet site(s) are used only when we go
to the computer lab. Each student then uses a machine which enables
us to do the work as a group.
SIGI-Plus is also used in the computer lab.
The VHS Videos are used in the classroom with a TV/VCR combination.
The things I like most about the resource
are as follows:
The students seem to be excited about using
these resources to accomplish our objectives.
They love using these resources. Students are
more acclimated to computer usage it seems and are more excited
about learning.
Limitations and suggestions to overcome
shortcomings:
I don’t feel as if there are any limitations,
other than the fact that we have a set amount of time in the computer
labs due to the great number of classes and greater interest in
using those labs. (Approximately 32 hours per trimester are set
aside for the Career Education program, 8 days x 4 hours per day)
Comments:
I would like to use the computers on a regular
basis but not able to because of limited times usage.
