Writing Training Module
Facilitation Tips
Conducting the kind of “hybrid” workshop (face-to-face + technology-mediated
distance learning) described in this module has proven to engage all the skills
of both participants and facilitators. And the effort is worth it. We have
conducted
many workshops,
and teachers have told us what elements they found most important and helpful
for their investigation. The following are some tips for facilitators culled
from our workshop feedback.
Help teachers to reflect on how they look at “teaching writing. ”
A chart and guidelines for examining perspectives is included in the
handouts section. Return to the topic as often as necessary.
Model your own perspective.
Use an interactive format that engages participants.
Try to keep participants individually engaged as much as possible. If
you are presenting to a large group (more than 25) , break it up for
the initial
sessions
so people can get to know you and each other. Follow with whatever
whole group instruction is necessary.
Situate the training in the classroom context.
Effective professional development should be coherent with the other
learning activities that teachers engage in, and incorporate experiences
that
are consistent with teachers’ goals. Often, teachers see a technology-mediated
activity as an “add-on” to their instructional materials.
Our goal is to help them integrate it into what they are already doing.
The
PDK video
on teaching
writing is based on the needs of a GED teacher to help her students
get started in writing.
Give both yourself and your participants enough time to feel comfortable
with the technology.
The power of technology creates a context in which teachers are empowered
to change their perspectives on what they can do and how they can
do it. In this
module, we will be modeling how you might create this context for
teachers through using the Professional Development Kit resources
and tools. While most teachers
are well aware of the potential of technology to support their
learners, they are not always aware of how it can enhance familiar
curriculum,
instructional
strategies, and techniques. Technology can also help teachers to
adopt and adapt concepts from research, by making research findings
more accessible through online
resources. However, the teacher must feel comfortable in the environment,
and empowered rather than intimidated by technology.
Incorporate a variety of resources, in different formats, including video,
audio, and print.
PDK offers a number of different formats to use. Feel free, however
to use other formats that you like. We have used and liked Captured
Wisdom,
the Study
Place (OTAN), and materials from centers like NCREL.
